We show you the new Huawei tablet that has presented in the Mobile World Congress: the Huawei MediaPad M5. The new bet of the Chinese company in the stagnant tablet market.
Unlike what we had thought based on the leaks, the photographic section will not be so important. On the other hand, we have finishes and a construction far superior to the rest of the competition's tablets. Built in metal and with more than powerful hardware, it is postulated to be the direct rival of the rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab S4.
Features of the Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4 and 10.8
This Huawei tablet has a hardware that promises to give us a more than satisfactory experience. With a good battery, an unusual good photographic section and a high-end processor, the Huawei MediaPad M5 aspires to be a top of the range in its sector:

Multimedia: two screens and a lot of technology
We have two models of the Huawei MediaPad M5 available, with different looks. We have on the one hand the Huawei MediaPad M5 of 8.4 ″ with reduced side edges and a larger one, the Huawei MediaPad M5 from 10.8 ″. The smaller model has more optimized side frames while the larger one has a larger panel size.
The resolution of the Huawei MediaPad M5 screens are 2560 x 1600 with «Enhanced ClariVu display» technology and IPS technology in both models. Huawei is a specialist in handling IPS panels, so the multimedia experience will be key in this device.
ClariVu technology will allow the tablet with intelligent algorithms to adjust unclear frames or frame drops per second when we are viewing multimedia content, and thus offer a better visual experience.
The screen of the Huawei MediaPad M5 is prepared with a special mode called «Comfort Eye» that reduces harmful blue light levels To make reading more comfortable. The same tablet will also automatically adjust the color temperature of the screen depending on the environment.
In addition we also have four speakers Harman kardon With Hi-Fi sound that promise audio with clear highs and deep bass without any distortion. We have them on both sides of the surface of the Huawei MediaPad M5 with the treatment of Harman's own brand.
Cameras: lights and shadows
Unlike other models of Honor and Huawei, this tablet (unlike what we believed according to the leaks) has cameras according to the type of product we are talking about. Some cameras that, in the absence of testing them, seem totally testimonial, even lacking LED flash.
The rear camera is 12 Mpx with a focal F/2.2 and an 8 Mpx front camera with the same focal aperture. With this tablet the photographic section does not seem to be very worked, but it is compensated with the rest of the qualities in which the Huawei MediaPad M5 stands out.
Hardware: a lot of variety
The combinations of memories are very varied and different for the type of user that prefers it. Sizes vary depending on the screen model and specifically for the Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro, which only has one combination:
- Model 8.4 ″: 32, 64 and 128GB of internal memory with 4GB of RAM
- Model 10.8 ″: 32, 64 and 128GB of internal memory with 4GB of RAM.
- Pro model: 64 or 128GB of internal memory with 4GB of RAM.
The Pro model has only two combinations of internal memory and RAM, while the other models have lower versions with 32GB. All these combinations have their variant with Wi-Fi and their variant with LTE.
As a processor we have the well-known Kirin 960, an Octa-Core at 2.4 GHz. The same processor that gave life to Huawei P10 and P10 Plus. This processor will offer us a very adequate performance for the type of product that it is, although it will have to be tested given the resolution of the screen and its size itself.
Connectivity: well equipped
In connectivity we have two variants, one with Wi-Fi and another with LTE support just in case we want to include such connectivity. We also have fast charge thanks to USB-C and also GPS + GLONASS how could it be otherwise. We do not have NFC, logical given the nature of the Huawei MediaPad M5.
Tablets with Chrome OS instead of Android: they exist, the first is from Acer
Acer shows a tablet at an education event. I don't miss anything until your operating system is observed: Chrome OS. An alternative to Android?
Software: EMUI and Android Oreo
We start with Android 8.0 Oreo inside, with the iconic Huawei layer EMUI in its version 8.0. The well-known Huawei software that also gives life to Honor smartphones will be responsible for running the Huawei MediaPad M5.
Excellent design, with metal finishes
The Huawei MediaPad M5 stand out for its design, which is a direct evolution of the old Mate. We find a design in which the back is completely metallic, with edges that facilitate grip. As with premium phones, the glass is Gorilla Glass 5. The edges are 2.5D, which means they have a tiny curvature that improves the feeling when using the device.
Mediapad M5 Pro, with Stylus and keyboard
Huawei has decided to provide a stylus to its new MediaPad M5. The purpose of this pencil is mainly to facilitate the task of photo editing, something indispensable for those who use their tablet for professional use in mobility. It is also an excellent tool for using note applications like Microsoft's OneNote.
Specifically, the pencil is called M-Pen, and includes technologies with 4096 pressure points. The problem is that this stylus will be reserved to the Pro model of the Huawei MediaPad M5, which will cost 50 euros more than the basic version. In addition, we will have only two memory combinations; 64 or 128GB of internal memory and 4GB of RAM.
On the other hand, we will also have a keyboard that will help us convert our Huawei MediaPad M5 on a PC and change the interface to do certain tasks that otherwise could not be done. These tasks range from office automation to productivity.
