Finally, everything that had leaked was practically fulfilled, and the Xiaomi Mi A3 has reached the market as the global version of the CC9e presented a couple of weeks ago in China, yes, with Android One as the operating system. We've been trying it for a while and here are our first impressions.

A design that falls in love, a screen that not so much

Xiaomi Mi A3 Colors 2

The first thing that stands out of the new Xiaomi Mi A3 is its glass construction with metallic edges and rounded corners, which make it as a whole result attractive to the eye and pleasant to the touch. Unlike the aluminum with a matt finish of the Mi A2, in this case we have three bright colors (blue, gray and pure white) that generate beautiful reflections depending on how the light affects the terminal and gives it a premium appearance.

In addition to something slippery, the problem, the usual problem with these types of materials is obvious: presence of footprints and dirt in general, something that is much more visible in dark colors (white is not noticeable so much). In any case, we can always use the case that Xiaomi includes in the box to avoid it and protect the phone by counteracting the sensation of fragility that it transmits and at the same time improving the grip.

On the bottom edge, we have the USB-C connector and the speaker, while on the top, we find the headphone jack and the infrared sensor. The right side is reserved for the volume controls and the power button, and the left for the card slot. In this sense, the Mi A3 it has a double tray, so that we can choose if we put in it two SIM cards or one SIM and one micro SD.

The back is completely smooth, except for the triple camera, which is vertically aligned in the upper left corner. The three sensors are housed in a module that protrudes from the body, which causes some dirt to accumulate in its contour and that the terminal "limps" slightly when we leave it on a smooth surface. That is, unlike the Mi A2 and the Mi A1, in this case we do not have a fingerprint reader in the back area because it is integrated into the screen.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Rear

And precisely the screen is what we are going to talk about now. The new Mi A3 incorporates a 6.1-inch AMOLED panel (6,088 to be more exact) with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 glass and a drop-shaped notch that sets it apart from its predecessors. The frames are relatively tight, somewhat thicker the bottom, but without being exaggerated for a mid-range mobile.

But if you look at the screen, there is one detail that we cannot ignore: its resolution. And, to the disappointment of many, Xiaomi has chosen to provide the Mi A3 with resolution HD +, which is a step backwards from its predecessor, the Mi A2, which had a FullHD panel. Why? As we have been told from the brand itself, to stay in that price range, "you cannot have everything", and have preferred to bet on the section of the camera and the autonomous.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Screen 2

And at the moment of truth, it shows? Unfortunately, s. You miss that extra resolution, as well as you miss something more shine, because even if we take it to the maximum, it seems like something short. We could not test it outdoors, but we intuit that, under direct sunlight, this can be a problem.

In addition, whites tend to be somewhat cold, and as we are facing an Android One terminal, the Google system offers us many less customization options that MIUI and does not allow us to adjust temperature, contrast and saturation.

Pure Android on hardware that doesn't make a big leap

Xiaomi Mi A3 Pie

The Mi A3 integrates as a processor the successor of the Snapdragon 660 from Qualcomm, which was precisely the one with the Mi A2. We talk about Snapdragon 665, which has an 11-nanometer LPP construction and is made up of eight Kyro 260 cores up to 2.0 GHz. They are accompanied by the Adreno 610 GPU, 4 GB of RAM and two storage options: 64 or 128 GB of storage (in both cases, expandable with a micro SD card up to 256 GB).

The best phones with Android One of 2019

We have not been able to subject the Mi A3 to the corresponding benchmarks nor have we had time to test it with demanding games, but during the time that we have been with it, we have perceived Some delay in multitasking and some sudden closure of apps. We will have to test it thoroughly in our analysis, but the first impression it has transmitted to us is that a higher level processor and some more RAM would have been desirable.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Software

Regarding the software, the identity of the Mi A family is precisely Android One, a basic and lightweight software, which, as we always say, has its advantages and disadvantages when we translate it into the user experience. On one side of the scale, we have that pure and clean Android experience, which is familiar to us and gives us a certain level of fluency and stability. But on the other, there are their few customization options.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Screen

The Xiaomi Mi A3 comes standard with Android 9 Pie and the apps that Google forces to install, no aesthetic additions, no bloatware No duplicate apps. The only touch that Xiaomi brings in the software of this Mi A3 is a small section of its own in the settings, the camera application and a couple of apps.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Reader

As for the options to unlock the terminal, Xiaomi's new proposal includes, as we have said, a fingerprint sensor integrated in the screen and facial recognition. We have tested both methods and they work correctly, accurately and quickly. In the case of the fingerprint sensor, every time we touch the screen, although it is turned off, a small symbol appears that indicates where we should put the finger to make it easier.

48 megapixels, group selfies and ultra wide angle as tricks

Xiaomi Mi A3 Camera

In the photographic section, the Mi A3 includes a 32 megapixel front camera with f / 2.0 aperture that It relies on Artificial Intelligence for automatic scene detection and portrait mode. The rear camera, meanwhile, is formed by a 48 megapixel main sensor with f / 1.79 aperture, a secondary 8 megapixel sensor with ultra wide angle of 118 degrees and a third 2 megapixel sensor that deals with depth. In both cameras, it uses Pixel Binning technology to combine four pixels into a larger one.

One of the few aspects in which Xiaomi gives its own personal touch, as we said before, is in the camera application. Here we meet an interface, intuitive and simple, that maintains the lines of design and distribution of icons that we have seen in other models of the brand with the latest version of MIUI.

Xiaomi Mi A3 App Camera

In the rear camera, we have a total of seven shooting modes: Short Video, Video, Photo, Portrait, Night, Panoramic and Pro. In the latter, we can manually adjust the exposure speed, diaphragm, white balance, sensitivity and lens: wide or ultra wide.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Lenses From left right: 0.6X vs. 1X vs. 2X (all in automatic)

In Photo mode is where we can play with wide angle shooting at 0.6x, 1x or 2x, while in Portrait mode, we have a beautifier, filters and the possibility to adjust the depth of field to achieve the bokeh effect. In addition, we have several filters, flash, Artificial Intelligence, Google Lens, timer … In short, in the absence of testing their behavior in different scenes, we do not miss any option.

As for the front camera, we have four shooting modes: Short Video, Video, Photo, Portrait and Panormica. As it has a single sensor, it is forced to turn to software to achieve the bokeh effect. The bad? That is not very accurate and is something artificial. The good? That we can adjust the blur to our liking.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Selfie Selfie in Photo mode (left) vs. Selfie in Panormica mode (right)

Here, especially highlights that Panormica mode (Panorama Selfie), which allows you to rotate the camera on both sides while we make a self-portrait to open the viewing angle and include more elements in the photo (more friends or more background, depending on the situation).

The toughest rivals are at home

Xiaomi Mi A3 Rear 2

In the absence of testing the sections in which Xiaomi has put more effort for this model (the autonomy and the performance of the cameras), the Mi A3 is a mobile that aspires to become the best seller that was already his predecessor, but we are not very clear that he will have it so easy.

The fact of having opted for a unique configuration of 4 GB of RAM (instead of an alternative with 6 GB) and a Qualcommm 6 series processor (instead of one of the series 7) is something that probably has an impact on the overall performance of the phone. Nor does it help to have sacrificed the FullHD + resolution of the screen, especially considering that some more brightness would also have been desirable.

For that price, there are few models of other brands that can cope with it; the problem is in the catalog of Xiaomi itself

In any case, we are facing a model that has taken a great leap in design and that has added values like that huge 4,030 mAh battery with fast charge, the integrated fingerprint reader on the screen and cameras that, a priori, promise wide possibilities. All this for a price that, remember, part of the 249 euros. Few models of other brands are in that range that can cope …

The problem, in this case, is within the Xiaomi catalog, where for that price or little else, s we have some other considerable rival for the Mi A3 (lase the Mi 9T, for example). Even if we look at models from last year (the Pocophone F1 or even its predecessor, the Mi A2).
