Last week we talked to you for the first time about Xiaomi’s intentions to launch a 108 megapixel camera phone. At the time of writing that news, there is no camera sensor for smartphones with such a resolution, but the rumors pointed to a collaboration with Samsung to create a sensor of its Isocell line that would respond to those characteristics. Currently, Samsung already had 48 and 64 megapixel cameras (the latter, recently introduced). Today we see how he just presented his 108 megapixel camera.
If we talked about megapixel warfare a few years ago, what we have been living since last year is even more serious. We have gone from having phones with cameras between 12 and 16 megapixels capable of taking pictures of very good quality now, the majority of current phones bet on 48 megapixel cameras and more and more resolution. We want to remember that more is not always better, although this type of camera presents a very interesting concept.
The new 108 megapixel camera can record in 6K
It was very early this morning when Samsung officially presented its Isocell Bright HMX sensor. The name may not give many clues, but it is the first 108 megapixel camera for smartphones. This resolution can currently only be found in professional cameras, although not having more megapixels, be better than other sensors. What is a highlight, is the size of the sensor, 1 / 1.33 inches, making it the largest mobile camera sensor on the market today, exceeding the size of the cameras of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
This 108 megapixel camera will make use of the 4-in-1 pixel merger, as in the 48 and 64 megapixel cameras. Thus, the final photographs will have a resolution of 27 megapixels. Each of the physical pixels has a size of 0.8m, but after this merger, it will have a simulated size of 1.6m, which allows to capture much more light, thus improving the photograph. Of course, considering the size of the sensor, we would have liked to see fewer megapixels, but that each pxel had a larger size.
Samsung has wanted to give some feature about this new camera sensor. Your 108 megapixel camera you can record even at 6K (6,016 x 3,384 pixels) at 30 fps. This new sensor has been developed jointly with Xiaomi and be exclusive to the brand, which will be used in high-end terminals. It will start manufacturing this month, so it is very likely that the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 is the phone chosen to release this impressive camera from which we want to see the results.
