WiGig, The future of wireless networks?

The future is wireless, who likes it. The cables are destined to disappear, they are very limiting, uncomfortable and unsightly, and wireless technology is increasingly evolving to try to offer us the same stability, speed and quality as wired connections. One of these new technologies that will soon arrive to improve our WiFi connections at home It is called WiGig (Wireless Gigabit). But it comes with important limitations, which may prevent their implantation in homes. What is it, what are its advantages and disadvantages? We explain everything below.

Faster than conventional WiFi

It is our daily bread: we hire 300Mbps of symmetric fiber but then when connecting to our WiFi network we do not get more than 30Mbps of download. If we approach the router everything improves, but when we go to the bedroom or the kitchen we can barely see Netflix in decent quality. Current standards have many problems in homes, especially in urban areas where the saturation of wireless networks is enormous. The interference, the walls and the router's own quality are the enemies of the quality of our connection.

To get an idea, the current standard that offers us the highest speed is the 802.11ac that all Apple devices currently have with which we reach up to 3Gbps at best. This means that it is already a reality to achieve almost three times that speed with the new WiGig, and we can reach up to multiply by 30 the maximum current speed in the near future. Where is the problem then?</p>
<h2>Very limited range: 10 meters</h2>
<p>This is the limiting factor of this new technology and the one that may end up condemning it to failure: it barely has a range of 10 meters. <strong>To give you an idea, it's like a conventional Bluetooth connection in this aspect</strong>. Worse, it cannot pass through walls, so in practice its operation is limited to a room in the house.</p>
