A cyclist suffers third-degree burns after falling off the bike and setting the iPhone on fire

As we can read in the Sydney Morning Herald:

A cyclist from Sydney has suffered severe burns when his iPhone exploded after the fall he suffered. Gareth Clear, 36, said the iPhone was in his pants pocket and was set on fire after falling off the bike when he was taking a ride on Sunday afternoon.

“I saw smoke coming out of the back pocket of my pants and suddenly I felt a terrible pain sensation.” Gareth said. I also affirm that he noticed an “unbearable heat” when the iPhone began to catch fire in his pants, a fire that lasted only a few seconds.

The Autralian Office of Consumption states that is investigating this accident but that because smartphones are getting thinner every time, the number of such accidents increases.

The decrease in size and deltas of portable devices, along with consumer expectations about battery life are a challenge for battery manufacturers. Lithium batteries are vulnerable to a significant physical impact that can be given by the separators of the different elements that make up the battery.
