When it seemed that the most striking innovation focused on the screen in this curious and arduous journey towards 100% of the front used by it, it is the cameras that now star in the most different and striking designs. A champion of this is this Samsung smartphone that is unmarked from the periscope front cameras to install a reversible and ambivalent triple camera, and we tell them in detail about it and the other features in the Samsung Galaxy A80 review.
A mobile that integrates components that are riding between the medium and high range, although globally it is located in the first. Maybe that's why it has come with a price that is higher than what we usually see in this range of smartphones, and that in some ways also serves to mark that it is certainly a special and different mobile.

Design: the prominence of the screen thanks to the "magic" with the cameras
The Galaxy A range is still that mid-range family with high-end aspirations in some of the cases, and the construction looks somewhat more at its older brothers than in the past, remembering for example the Samsung Galaxy A6 +. With metal edges and glass back, the shiny fashion patent leather finish reigns over the entire smartphone cover with a leaden tone.
That rear, despite following fashion, is particular. Draw a curvature at the sides and simplicity prevails, only with the Samsung logo on it, but there is a necessary division due to the mobile part which integrates the reversible camera.
In this way, we see that there is a physical separation between this mobile part and what is the back cover, but they have not sought to hide it much less and this is probably a success. There is a fine (but obvious) gap between these parts, but by giving a different color note to this upper section they achieve that nothing is wrong or break the harmony (it is subtle, this part being clearer than in the rest of the back ).
That is, what is the module of the three chambers (the black rounded rectangle of the center) is quite striking. It is protuberant and has a coppery gold frame for the protective glass that it takes away elegance (at least according to the western cnones), and when turning to act as a frontal camera it is quite old (very classic, perhaps too much), at least taking into account the current currents in design.
All this we like more or less, but what happens independently (and worries about continued use) is that in the grooves Dust particles or grits remain. It will be necessary to see if this ends up being a problem especially in relation to the gap between the mobile and the fixed part.
The metal frame acts as a bridge between these rear covers and acquires a different tone as we have said, more warm but also gray. In it the screen fits, of minimal edges and chin more discreet than in other previous terminals of the brand, without notch no holes thanks to that reversible camera. Oh, and no button for Bixby (thanks, Samsung).
A priori the size does not attract attention seeing those we are seeing lately, but it is quite heavy
A priori, the size and volume fit with what we are seeing lately and do not call attention in hand beyond the consideration that it is another large phone, but I know that it's quite heavy. Without knowing the exact weight before holding it, already in that first contact we deduced that it was over 200 grams, being specifically in 220 grams.

The Samsung Galaxy A80 is the most voluminous of this selection, just as diagonally as the Samsung Galaxy A70 and close to the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom and the OnePlus 7 Pro. It also gains in weight, considering that it probably integrates the same battery as the A70 (3,700 milliamps / hour) and that does not reach 4,000 mAh or more of the above or the Huawei P Smart Z (more content and lightweight).
After trying several smartphones with this diagonal and a volume on that line, the size is not striking, helped by the sensation of any screen
Interestingly, it is just as thick as the Reno 10x Zoom, both with a mobile module (although the OnePlus 7 Pro is thinner with its module also smaller). The truth is that after trying several smartphones with this diagonal and a volume on that line, as we say size is not flashy, helped by the sensation of any screen that we will comment later and that always contributes to make the experience more pleasant and the dimensions are forgotten or forgiven to some extent.
In hand is comfortable, the grip is nice helped by the curves and that all the angles and edges are softened. That's right, it slips a lot, but at least resists fingerprints very well (Without miracles, but better than others), so good for that oleophobic finish that leave us a better memory than we have of other brand phones like the Samsung Galaxy A7 2018.
On the front, what was said. The edges are considerably reduced if we compare with other mid-range Samsung such as the Samsung Galaxy A9 2018, remaining in the A70 line but without that U-shaped notch, and with the fingerprint reader built into the screen There is no element that invades the back or the sides (later we will talk about its performance).
Samsung Galaxy A80 6.7 "FHD + Smartphone (Infinite Display, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB ROM, Spanish version) Silver
The edges are generally quite clear considering that no 3.5 mm jack, the discretion of the speaker next to the USB and that the tray for the nanoSIM is also on this side. And in the front we do not see a headset or visible speaker, so nothing interrupts the joint between the screen and the frame with the discreet solution that the screen is the headset using piezoelectric components, which does not need even the smallest physical output as we saw in the first Xiaomi Mi MIX and in later ones.
Display: 6.7 inches AMOLED with nothing to interrupt them
Almost absolute prominence for a panel that manages to look more than in the Samsung Galaxy A70 despite measuring the same thanks to the option of the reversible camera module mechanism (instead of integrating a front camera as such). In this way, according to GSMArena we talk about 86% of use of the front by the screen, this being a notable figure even more speaking of a mid-range.
A panel 6.7 inch super AMOLED with FullHD + resolution (1,080 x 2,400 pixels), the same as the A70 and somewhat larger than the Samsung Galaxy S10e, although with lower pixel density than this (438 pixels per inch compared to the 393 of the A70 and the A80). A value that is sufficient to give a good experience at the level of sharpness and that fits well in this product range.
Well at the level of contrast and saturation, it comes from the factory with an adequate vividness of colors although somewhat fra. The positive: the software layer provides a series of adjustments to be able to configure something else in our way. The negative: that to adjust the temperature we will necessarily have to choose the vivid color mode, which is too saturated (and reminds us of times of irremediably supersaturated AMOLEDs).
We see that the characteristic color reflection of the screens with this technology comes out without having to look for it much, although in any case it is much less exaggerated than we saw in the A6 + (very good for this). But at the level of viewing angles not much is done to beg for the traditional greenish / pink tints of these panels to appear when they are not of the highest quality.
The maximum brightness is about 600 nits, which is enough for the content to look good under the Sun (although in the hours of greater and more intense incidence a plus will not hurt). Also good level of contrast and correction in regard to touch sensitivity, although they occur enough accidental touches when we support the thumb on the side edge (those frames are thinner).
The automatic brightness adjustment It works very well, nothing to object to ah. Although we will see that when it reaches 5% of the battery it is automatically reduced to 5%, and it may be too low (although better than the 0% we see in LG with a similar system). It would be nice to be able to adjust this so that for example this automatic reduction would be 10% of the brightness.
In addition to being able to adjust the screen temperature to a certain extent, we can configure its activation with the double tap or when raised. We will see in the software section also the possibilities for navigation, but what we already discussed here is the possibility of establishing or programming the ambient screen, called in this case Always on.
We see that it has some configuration options and allows access with double tap to the content of the notifications from the icon that appears (if we have an unlock method, we must do it). We can also configure the appearance and appear a certain image, and something quite useful that is to activate the widget of music playback (podcasts, Spotify, etc.), which works especially well on the lock screen, although there are not many more widgets to choose.
Samsung Galaxy A80 6.7 "FHD + Smartphone (Infinite Display, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB ROM, Spanish version) Silver
In addition to all this there are a dark mode, but we will not find it in the screen options, but in the battery options that in turn we will find within the maintenance of the device. As usual, apply to own interfaces (including the notification curtain) and it is quite pleasant, with a dark gray background and the possibility of setting it in a time interval.
Fortunately, the software layer allows some customization and some aspects can be modified such as font size and icons and the navigation buttons so that something else can be removed from that screen. The work with the frames is very good in the case of a mid-range and taking advantage of the fact that the fingerprint reader is also integrated in the screen the interface could take more advantage, but what is independent of this (for example, the reproductions and apps on the screen complete) can be enjoyed well.
Performance: a mid-range processor and high-end RAM
There was some confusion around the processor of this terminal, but later we learned that what integrates the Samsung Galaxy A80 is a recent Snapdragon 730 accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage (no extension possible with microSD).
It is a bit between the mid-range and the high at this level with a processor that by series and performance will be on the average, but with an amount of RAM more characteristic of first-line mobiles with Android (where in fact we found many with 6 GB and even some with 4 GB). But just like milliamps / hour is not all that defines autonomy, gigabytes of RAM do not determine everything in performance and experience either.
What do we find in this case? That by hardware the smartphone can execute any heavy task without being limited, although sometimes we see a lag punctual that could be related to the software, for example when opening the multitasking, when changing the orientation or even at the beginning of the system every time we turn it on (it takes so long that they have even enabled a notification indicating that a moment is expected).
When we start the mobile, although it takes a few minutes to touch it, there is a notification that indicates the start of the system and we will have to leave a few seconds when trying to unlock it.
The cell phone is normally kept at an adequate temperature, except when we play about ten minutes or less that we will already notice the temperature rise especially in the upper back. Also be warm when we use it as a media player, for example when playing music or podcasts.
For those who take performance tests as a reference, we show you the results of the Samsung Galaxy A80 at benchmarks usual.

Software: One UI, at the intersection of invasiveness and customization
Behind are the TouchWiz times as One UI settles its design lines, but what remains is the way it invades the aesthetics of Android stock imposing its own. Although, as we will see now, there is room for customization.
So we have the One UI layer in its version 1.1 about Android 9 Pie, and something that is appreciated is that before opening the home screen for the first time lets us choose which apps to install. We must accept those of Google, but those of Samsung can be omitted or deleted later.
This is the factory Samsung Galaxy A80 desktop.
In this way, we can start the smartphone more or less clean talking about bloatware, although some of the own apps are what usually comes as a basic utility such as the calculator. As standard, the system is organized in an app drawer and desktop, but can be changed to a single space (without drawer) by going to the Home screen section in the screen settings.
With these apps the factory Samsung Galaxy A80 starts (having deselected most of those offered in the pre-load).
Some apps can be uninstalled or disabled. Although that is, in the case of the second Samsung continues to allow them to be updated, so that they reappear among our apps.
We have talked about these before, although we can add some more details, especially for the organization and navigation of the system interfaces. Samsung continues to opt for that huge and wasted space for the headers of each menu of adjustments and that we will not be able to modify, but it is the enormous size of typography and icons that comes as standard (it is as if an accessibility option was activated by default).
So you can take advantage of space better, for example changing the grid of the items on the desktop / drawer to fit more apps as we have seen in the screen section. This can also be changed in the toggles of the curtain of notifications, although we will also have this great area wasted.
As for possibilities of navigationSamsung is currently betting on its own shooter system, one for each of the actions that traditional navigation buttons will have (which are activated by default). With this we can clear the screen a bit more to give more surface to the interface, since the handles are more discreet than the buttons or the Android 9 Pie button bar, although there are no gestures like the ones we see in OnePlus , Xiaomi or Huawei among others.
Despite activating the "gestures", which theoretically leave more space to the user interface, the space can be better used.
In addition, we can activate Bixby Home, the card tab offered by One UI and which allows quick access to smartphone content, websites, news or apps. It is customizable and is accessed by sliding to the right from the home screen, and if we prefer not to have it we can deactivate it by opening the desktop / home screen customization options and deactivating the switch from Bixby Home.
I did not look for the activation / deactivation of Bixby in the settings, it is in the options of the home screen (this is not very intuitive).
It can be useful if we always consult the same websites or use the same apps, although we will have to give some extra permissions depending on what we want to appear. What is not clear is what happens when there is a notification in the options menu (top right), with the same balloon that appears in the notification curtain, and we have to open each option in search of what it is (tip: open the Settings first before the Notifications, even if the intuition tells you otherwise).
In addition, finally Bixby Voice He reached the mid-range and this time it shows that he has been training. While it is true that the configuration is very concise (we do not know what the "capsules" are and we cannot manage them, for example), the assistant now understands rather better and has automatic routines for certain commands, such as a series of actions by saying "good morning" or "good night".
Within what offers everything related to virtual assistance are the Bixby routines, which allow to establish precisely that series of automatic actions on demand. Very useful for example is to configure one of them by getting ready to drive.
We also find a section of Digital health, following the trail of Android's Digital Wellbeing and the applications of the style that we also see in other layers. We show the unlocks we do in the day, as well as the notifications received and a circular chart dividing the time between the apps we use the most (in the foreground). There we will also see that we can manage rest times, usage timers for each app or notifications of these, without having to go to the corresponding section in the settings.
Samsung Galaxy A80 6.7 "FHD + Smartphone (Infinite Display, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB ROM, Spanish version) Silver
The usual one is also maintained maintenance suite, in which there are shortcuts for battery management, storage, memory and security. There are no surprises in this regard, finding some assistance to release the mobile software load a bit based on restrictions or closures in the background and also to save on energy consumption (we will see it in the autonomous section).
We can also find the Game Launcher, which forms that section dedicated to the games can be enjoyed something more focused on blocking or reducing notifications or some aspects such as automatic brightness or Bixby. It is not a blockade as specific and effective as that of other game modes such as OnePlus and it is more uncomfortable because the settings are only accessible by a notification during the game (and not with any button, as in the case of LG), So it has a lot of room for improvement.
In general, it is a very aggressive layer of aesthetics with its own, but each time it makes it easier for the user to personalize the experience a little more. S we consider that there is work to do in terms of debugging so that there is no lags with 8 GB of RAM and a decent processor, so we will see if in the next One UI updates we see news in this regard.
Biometra
The fingerprint readers on screen They have not been on smartphones for so long. We began to see them in 2018 with the entry already early in the year of the Vivo X20 Plus UD, whose wake will follow the Vivo Nex and many others from other manufacturers and even try several options and technologies such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 + ultrasound sensor. And in less perhaps than expected we see him roaming freely in mid-range phones like this.
Obviously, not all are the same even if we talk about the same technology and the experience depends on factors outside the sensor itself, such as animation, and in this case the incorporation into the Samsung Galaxy A80 does not convince us (it is not ultrasonic). It limits us to three tracks (usually at least four are allowed) and is ineffective, having to resort regularly to the pattern or alternative traditional method that we have configured.
In fact, it is striking that the fingerprint check that it offers in the configuration works better than the actual reading itself, with which we have verified whether aspects such as the screen transition offered to eliminate in the Biometric data preferences section influence. And we have not managed to improve with this either: it is very, very demanding and it's weird that it works at first, in addition to the animation (which cannot be changed or deleted) slows down the process when the reading is effective.
We may think: well, we always have facial recognition. But no, the Samsung Galaxy A80 no facial recognition, and that reversible camera does not serve to offer an alternative to the reading of fingerprints (although it is possible to expect a speed similar to that of the OPPO Find X because it needs the whole module to appear).
For all this, this section will have to improve a lot so that the experience is at least acceptable as in other cases. It is of little use to offer such a clear screen if then the unlocking, something so basic, is not satisfactory or you have to resort to traditional methods (more than it would have been a rear or side fingerprint sensor).
Cameras: the experience with a triple camera that should be worth six
Exceptionally we vary the section of the cameras for obvious reasons: there is no separation between front and rear cameras because there are both roles. However, we will separate in the analysis the result of one case and another, due to the importance of the selfie at present and being a shot quite different than the one done with the rear.
We refer to that reversible camera module of which we have spoken before, which integrates all the cameras of this terminal. As a curiosity, a small video that the Twitter user @UniverseIce (known for being one of the most popular filters) shared this video of the mechanism.
This is the mechanical structure of the Galaxy A80 camera, which is very complicated but takes up space.Video from a Chinese Samsung engineer pic.twitter.com/YTdLfyqIFI
– Ice universe (@UniverseIce) July 3, 2019
What integrates in the curved is a main camera with a 48 megapixel sensor with a standard f / 2.0 aperture lens and an 8 megapixel lens with a wide angle lens of 123 degrees of field of vision and aperture f / 2.2. And we can talk about triple camera counting the sensor Time of Flight dedicated to depth analysis.
Camera app
The app does not present changes with respect to what we have seen in One UI in its last version talking about mobiles with a triple mid-range scheme. The button to change the camera is in the interface both automatic and manual and we find the scheme with tabs and navigation by swipes.
The HDR remains a section of the settings and there is no quick access even if we set it to manual. It is where we also find the possibility of selecting the quality of the video, although we will see that it gives us the choice between rear and front cameras, even if it will be the same in the end.
So that the cameras make frontals we find the traditional button. We will see that it protrudes and the module rotates until it is parallel to the vertical axis of the mobile and with the zoom activated to have a frame only of the face, being able to move it away to have more field of vision with an identical camera change button.
The manual mode is provided as the manufacturer usually does with the mid-range phones, so that we can only reset ISO, white balance and exposure (and the measurement of light from a quick access on the other side). The way to go has been added in the last place is the night, although something positive that Samsung has and perhaps no other manufacturer with its own camera app is the possibility of editing, adding and removing the modes for convenience.
It is an intuitive and particularly customizable app, which is interesting to inspect at first for those adjustments that may be somewhat different to the Android stock camera app or that of other manufacturers. S is true that in some cases the shot is slow, so maybe your performance can be improved.
Photographic analysis
In general, in scenes with daylight and natural lighting Samsung Galaxy A80 gives acceptable results, almost always with an extra saturation but without spoiling the result (there will be who likes it and this will save a later edition). In addition to this saturation, it is not too much of dynamic range, especially speaking of the wide angle, and as the case may be somewhat overexposed shots.
The HDR It is quite aggressive, which brings us memories of processed or similar results with too marked contours and the feeling that the image is unreal and with very low contrast. S can help us in some backlight or if the sky appears burned in automatic, but if not perhaps it is better not to always have it activated or leave it in automatic (if we deactivate the app we suggest when to use it and it is usually right).
Quiz the weakest point is the detail, but it is not too exaggerated than we expected for this sensor and a mid-range mobile. Spinning with this, at night it tends to overexpose and that favors the appearance of noise (which can even be seen in some daytime shots), which lowers the final sharpness.
Indoors we find images with less detail, without finding watercolors unless the conditions are too demanding. The noise, although present, can not be seen at first sight in most shots, although it should be emphasized that in this situation and at night the shot is more demanding and, therefore, slower.
The wide angle resolves in an acceptable manner at the level of contrast and colors. The price to be paid is also a moderate distortion, some noise and underexposure, so it is convenient that we finish the correction that is given as an option in the settings (although it is only effective for selfies).

A favor
Against
