One of the most curious functions of iOS is the creation of smart albums in the Photos app, classifying the snapshots according to the people that appear or the place where they were taken. Apple wants to take this one step further, and allow any app to detect dogs and cats.
With VNAnimalDetector we will always have the photos of our dog or cat located
With iOS 13, the developer who is interested will have the possibility to add a cat and dog detector to their applications thanks to VNAnimalDetector. It is a function that is part of the Apple Vision framework and, as Cult of Mac has, It is very easy to integrate by being very few lines of code.
In the example of Apple you can see a cat being transported inside a backpack by its owner through a snowy forest. VNAnimalDetector is able to recognize that there is an animal in the photograph, more specifically a cat, and that it is somewhere snowed outside.
The process is carried out by machine learning and can be implemented on both iOS and macOS and iPadOS. It does not have to do with the 3D sensors introduced in the latest iPhone and iPad Pro models, but it works on any "flat" image thanks to advanced image recognition.
